Long before dancefloors existed, human communities knew that rhythmic sound dissolves the boundary between the individual and the collective. From Sufi practices of samā' to Gnawa traditions, from Asian shamanism to ceremonies of the Americas, repetitive percussion has always been a technology of collective transformation.
